In Straatsburg is vandaag de eerste bijeenkomst van het nieuwverkozen Europees parlement van start gegaan, en dat zullen ze geweten hebben: duizenden Catalanen betogen voor de deur tegen het feit dat drie van hun verkozenen van de Spaanse staat niet mogen komen zetelen, omdat ze zich niet eerst in Madrid komen onderwerpen aan het Spaanse gezag.

Een verkozene van het Spaanse rechts-nationalistische VOX gebruikte vandaag meteen het interne mailsysteem van het Europees Parlement om tegenover iedereen de oorlog te verklaren aan het Catalaanse onafhankelijkheidsstreven. Dat gaat zo:

‘Throughout the day you may have witnessed a series of actions with a clear antidemocratic nature, led by militants of Catalan separatist groups. The region in which I was born and I have been living till today.  I feel obliged, in order to defend the Rule of Law and the dignity of the Spanish judiciary system, to remind you that Mr. Carles Puigdemont and Mr. Antoni Comin did not respect at all either Spanish constitutional laws or the rules for acquiring the condition of MEP, as it was confirmed yesterday by the Court of Justice of the European Union. To exercise their rights both of them should have complied with the obligation to attend the Spanish Parliament and express their will to comply with the Constitution, which they did not do as they are fugitives.

I would also like to underline, as you may know, that both of them have open criminal proceedings against them for committing serious crimes against the constitutional order in Spain, putting in risk coexistence and civil rights, especially for those living in Catalonia, with their rebellious actions. Currently they are fugitives from Spanish Justice as a consequence of the deficiencies on the application of the European arrest warrant; deficiencies we have to solve with determination during this legislative term for its importance for the stabilisation of a true area of freedom, security and justice.

One of the founding principles of the Union is respect for the Rule of Law, and the moral conviction that the Law and judiciary systems are the ultimate guarantee of civil rights. For that reason, not a single European citizen can be legitimated to impose his will over the laws legitimately approved by the Spanish people.’

Als lid van VOX is dit parlementslid ook lid van de ECR-fractie, waartoe ook de… N-VA behoort.  In de voorbije jaren heeft de N-VA meer energie gestoken in de Catalaanse dan in de Vlaamse onafhankelijkheidsstrijd…

De N-VA-parlementsleden hebben nu de kans om eveneens via het interne emailsysteem op de Spaanse aanval te antwoorden.  Delegatieleider van de N-VA is Geert Bourgeois, die voordien als Vlaams Minister-President graag op de foto ging met zijn vriend Carlos Puigdemont.  Zal Bourgeois met een email de verdediging van zijn vriend op zich nemen?  Of zal hij maar zwijgen, om de lieve vrede?  We zijn benieuwd…
